Employee Training and Development as Determinants of Service Excellence in the Hospitality Industry: A Literature Review
Abstract
Employee training and development play an important role in improving service quality and customer satisfaction in the hospitality industry. This study aims to examine their contribution to service excellence through a narrative review of 25 existing research studies. The review critically analyzes training practices, professional development, employee competencies, organizational support, and service-related outcomes. The findings indicate that effective training enhances technical skills, communication abilities, employee performance, and customer satisfaction. However, training alone does not guarantee service excellence, as organizational support, leadership, employee motivation, and practical application of acquired skills also influence service delivery. The review further highlights the growing importance of continuous learning, experiential training, and technology-based development approaches. Methodological limitations and gaps in existing research are also identified. The study concludes that integrated training and development strategies are essential for strengthening employee capabilities, improving service quality, and achieving sustainable service excellence in hospitality organizations.
